FREE Common Core online professional development program for social studies and U.S. history teachers 

Who Built America Badges for History Education is offered by American Social History Project (based at the City University of New York). This program combines access to high-quality teaching materials aligned to the Common Core with ongoing feedback from teacher educators. As a leader in history education, ASHP has over 20 years of experience providing professional development to teachers in New York City and creating award-winning websites including History Matters, HERB: Social History for Every Classroom, and Mission US
  • Master Common Core history instruction by using model lessons and designing your own.
  • Join a community and receive support, guidance, and feedback from fellow teachers and American Social History Project history educators.
  • Develop expertise in Common Core standards, using technology, and social history content.

Great Decisions Teacher Training Institute.  

Annually the Foreign Policy Association works to bring high school educators from across the U.S. to New York City to learn about current global affairs issues. They have a 3-day workshop from June 30-July 02, 2014 designed to allow select high school Social Science and History teachers to build professional skills for engaging students in key international policy decisions and global issues. During the 3 days, teachers will attend a series of discussions with experts in various international fields and have sessions with Master Teachers to design curriculum around the issues they have learned.
 
The program provides up to a $300 travel reimbursement, provides hotel accommodations**, and is a no-fee program. All teachers are supplied with a copy of theGreat Decisions Briefing Book, DVD series, and Teacher’s Guide.
 
This year the program will address the following issue areas:
-Defense Technology
-Israel and the U.S.
-Turkey’s Challenges
-Islamic Awakening
-Energy Independence
-Food and Climate
-China’s Foreign Policy
-U.S. Trade Policy

Dream of a Nation- an Open Source Civics textbook now available FREE to educators.


Dream of a Nation is a public awareness and education initiative aiming to inform and empower citizens and students with critical knowledge and solutions for strengthening our society.  Currently, over 11,500 educators in all 50 states are using this open-source online book and curricular materials.  With over 400 pages of material that makes complex issues graspable, Dream of a Nation is a tool that will inform and engage. Download whole chapters or individual essays.  The hardcopy version of the book is now also available free for educators on a first come first serve basis (only cost is shipping).

A wide range of Common Core aligned unit and lesson plans were developed for English Language Arts , Math, and state-aligned for Social Studies, Civics, History, and other disciplines.

Gilder Lehrman Institute's Affiliate Schools Program is Available to Alaskan Schools

The Affiliate School Program is a special gateway to education resources, events, and tools designed to bring American history to life in the classroom. The program is funded by a “We the People” Challenge Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and is totally free of cost to schools and their districts. 

The Affiliate School Program allows teachers and schools special access to resources in the Gilder Lehrman Collection and our website, as well as regional Affiliate School forums with noted historians, preferential consideration for our Teacher Seminars, one small traveling exhibition at no cost, andessay contests for students.

Affiliate Schools receive:
  • Invitations to professional development opportunities for teachers, including preferential consideration in Gilder Lehrman’s renowned 40 teacher seminars
  • Free and discounted GLI materials throughout the year
  • Special access to the Gilder Lehrman Collection, recorded lectures from historians, and traveling exhibitions
  • Additional website content and features available only to teachers in Affiliate Schools
